[Festival Talk 3] The harmony between film & music

A scene in a film can be transformed with the appropriate music score. When does the melody soar high, or how do you draw audiences in with quiet moments? Be immersed into the world of film composing with Cheryl Ong and Kin Leonn respectively, where they will discuss their approaches to film scoring and working collaboratively with directors.
Cheryl Ong
Cheryl Ong is a Singaporean percussionist whose work spans the realms of contemporary music, improvisation, and sound. Classically trained yet unbound by tradition, her practice delves into the improvisational and experimental, seeking to uncover new textures and ideas. Apart from regularly performing with Singaporean band, The Observatory, her collaborations traverse disciplines and mediums. Recent work includes playing for Night of the Dry Flowers - a music programme for the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (BEEF7, 2025); composing music for Daniel Hui’s film Small Hours of the Night (2024); performing in Sim Chi Yin’s theatre piece One Day We’ll Understand (2024); collaborating in a duo performance with Khyam Allami for Latent Sonorities (2023); and participating in ensemble work for RATA Orchestra’s RATA: new grounds, new sounds (2022). Her track Hejira was featured in the closing credits of Yeo Siew Hua’s award-winning film A Land Imagined (2018).

Cheryl Ong
Kin Leonn
Kin Leonn is an ambient artist, composer, and producer known for his deeply immersive sound and forward-thinking approach to electronic and ambient music. He first gained recognition as a founding member of the electronic outfit midst, before debuting solo on Singapore/Tokyo-based KITCHEN. LABEL. His work now spans studio albums, film scores, and sound installations, amongst a plethora of sonic commissions. As a sought-after producer, he played a key role in shaping the evolving sound of avant-pop artist yeule, with his co-production and songwriting on the album ‘softscars’ helping to earn it a #10 on Pitchfork’s “50 Best Albums of 2023” list. He has since gone on to feature on productions with the likes of Moderat, Slow Pulp, Lucinda Chua, and Yune Pinku.
In extension, his original score compositions for films including The Breaking Ice (燃冬) by Anthony Chen and Crocodile Tears by Tumpal Tampubolon have been showcased at major festivals including Cannes, Busan, and Toronto. In the realm of installation art, he has also designed numerous multi-channel sonic installations – notably for Singapore Art Museum, ArtScience Museum, Singapore Night Festival, and more.
On stage, Kin Leonn’s performances balance live piano with electronic layering, creating a sense of fluidity and spontaneity within his sets. He has opened for internationally renowned acts such as Explosions In The Sky and Kiasmos. Appearing in Asia regularly, he has performed live at the likes of Wonderfruit Thailand, sold-out shows in Seoul, and frequent shows in Japan where his label is based. At home in Singapore, he remains an active figure in the music community as an installation artist, DJ, and mixing and mastering engineer.

Kin Leonn

Evan Low is an award-winning music producer and music director known for his innovative sound and genre-fluid approach. His collaborations span artists such as Benjamin Kheng, iNCH, and The Sam Willows, as well as music directors Sydney Tan and Martin Tang. Evan co-wrote and co-produced Singapore’s National Day theme songs “Not Alone” (2024) and “The Road Ahead” (2021) with Linying, and recently completed a world tour with legendary artist A-Mei as programmer and arranger contributor for her ASMeiR Max World Tour.
Beyond production, Evan has led major showcases like ChildAid 2022 and earned recognition at The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards for Best Sound. A champion of interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship, he continues to shape Singapore’s contemporary music landscape with creativity, heart, and purpose.
