Next Gen Cinephila: Film Community & Critism in Singapore
As part of the culmination of *SCAPE’s 3rd Film Critics Lab, we welcome you to join us for this programme, which aims to shed more light on what it means to be a cinephile in today’s dynamic if also oversaturated digital age.
Exploring areas such as the different forms of cinephilia, the fostering of film communities, as well as the state of film criticism and discourse in Singapore, the session comprises a panel discussion, interactive activities and networking opportunities with the youth panellists, Lab mentors and mentees.

Moderator & Panellists
Eternality Tan
ET is the vice-chair and programming director of the Singapore Film Society and an adjunct lecturer of film studies at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (NTU), DigiPen Singapore Institute of Technology and Nanyang Polytechnic. He is a prolific film critic with over 15 years of experience, having written more than 2,900 reviews on his award-winning site: eternalitytan.com. He was previously a film analyst with Netflix’s contingent talent. He holds a Master of Education from the National Institute of Education, furthering his passion for melding film and education together.
Daryl Cheong
Daryl does filmmaking, programming, criticism, and community building in Singapore. He is currently an English major at Nanyang Technological University, where he is an inaugural recipient of the Talent Scholarship. For film criticism, he is privileged to have been at SGIFF's Youth Jury and Critics Programme, and is an Editor of the Exposure publication in Singapore. He previously wrote for SGIFF’s Newwaves programme. He has been published in Rice Media, Yahoo, Cinema Voyeurs, Artjam, Atlas, Zaobao, Singapore Film Society, and Pioneer Road Journal.
Morris Yang
Morris is a film critic currently majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at the National University of Singapore. He has written for Film Inquiry and Slant Magazine, and currently serves as Associate Editor for In Review Online, a U.S.-based film publication. He also does film programming from time to time, having worked with the Singapore Film Society, Fantasia International Film Festival, and the International Cinephile Society, of which he is a voting member.
Renee Ng
Renee is a video editor and film programmer. She is interested in the socio-cultural relationships that films and cinephilia share with the world. She has curated film programmes for the Singapore International Film Festival, Asian Film Archive and Objectifs, and participated in the Film Programmer’s Lab in 2024. Renee is also a freelance editor, with credits that include the NYFA award-winning film Dirty Laundry (2022).
Sasha Han
Sasha is a film writer seeking to reify the fugitive effects of looking through language. Broadly, her interests lie in examining the circulation of images in Southeast Asia. She is an alumnus of critics labs at the Locarno Film Festival, Far East Film Festival and the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF). Her writing has been published by MUBI Notebook, the Southeast Asian-based MARG1N magazine, Variety and the Asian Film Archive.Since 2021, she has worked with SGIFF as part of its preselection committee, synopsis writer and most recently, as part of editorial for its film magazine Atlas.
