About the award

The SYFF Most Promising Award was introduced in 2022 to recognise an up-and-coming filmmaker who demonstrates strong potential in their foray into filmmaking.

This award is created specially for the Student Category and is selected by the selection committee.

About the award recipient

Sophia Wu is an 18-year-old soon-graduating student from Raffles institution who makes films with whatever she can get her hands on, seeking to push the limits of what she can do in the medium.

After falling in love with film and gaining a foundation in filmmaking and storytelling through her school's film courses, she went on to win awards in Objectifs' Student Visual Storytelling Awards, and produce an official alunch video for her school's edible garden.

She seeks to evoke the inexplicable yet tender emotions we experience through her works, exploring the facets of human emotion and connection. Each film is an attempt to understand and process the temporal nature of everything in our world, and to preserve a moment's fleeting thought or feeling. Sophia has a knack for finding beauty in the often ignored, posessing an urge to tell honest stories through her whimsical, almost painted and surreal visual style with open framing and striking colors.

As a young filmmaker, she is excited to see what she can do with filmmaking to impact the community and grow in her own style. Sophia believes in the power of film to resonate with the individual and inspire change for a better world.

Recipient’s Message

This is all rather surreal; I have so much respect for all SYFF’s nominees and filmmakers. Quite literally, I hope to be like them when I grow up.

Singapore Youth Film Festival is such an accessible platform for the exchange of film to occur and I think this is so valuable and beautiful. The sheer amount of light and hope SYFF brings to the local film scene, and to me — as an attendee last year, my love for filmmaking was genuinely revitalized by the conversations undertaken by the filmmakers and I was reminded of why I loved the medium. SYFF is an amazing place for filmmakers and people who love film to synergise and mix in a big wonderful soup of passion and insight.

And so, I cannot express how immensely lucky I feel to be a part of this. If anything, I’ve learnt that truly, you miss all the shots you don’t take. I submitted Liberosis expecting nothing, feeling embarrassed I was even trying. However, the world works in mysterious ways. I’ve battled with the fear of putting myself out there but that is exactly what needs to be done. I’m consistently in awe of my peers who have no fear about sharing their creativity and letting their works be visible. I say — always take the chance. Keep making things, keep trying, dream big, because I believe art will change the world. The power of film to inspire and catalyse change, and provoke thought and conversation, is infinite.

I hope to keep learning and growing both in and through film, and perhaps enrich the film industry just as it’s enriched my life. I couldn’t have gotten here without the support and community I’ve experienced; Filmmaking needs a community, and SYFF embodies that wholly.
